The Colcom Foundation started in 1996 by Cordelia S. May supports preserving the environment, family planning, and reducing the number of immigrants in the United States. They believe that large populations in the United States lead to pollution, overdeveloping and wasting natural resources, and use up resources that humans and animals need to survive.
Colcom Foundation support programs that preserves land and promote healthy living through sustainable agriculture, developing parks and preserving areas of land, and monitoring industry for polluting the water and air quality. One project and organization the Colcom Foundation supports is Protect Pt an organization that monitors the air quality near Westmoreland and Allegheny counties in Pennsylvania.
This organization has specialized equipment set up to monitor regions located near fracking sites. The information collected warns residents of the dangers associated with fracking. This organization protects the resident’s safety and the Colcom Foundation donated $250,000 for this monitoring program. The program monitors air quality, radon testing, and noise levels. This led to the denial of two permits for oil well pads.
The organization supports improving water quality in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The organization donated to the West Virginia Water Research Institute to monitor water quality in this region. A grant of $350,000 was given to establish funds for watershed groups that collect data on water quality. This can lead to funding for programs that address water pollution.
The program began in 2008 when salt levels rose in local river water supplies. They launched a water monitoring program that led to a program that controlled the salt levels in the water. This has led to better funding for watershed groups in Pennsylvania leading to better water quality for residents.
Colcom Foundation has donated to many environmental projects to make land and resources safer for the public. Some of these other projects are The Garden of Five Senses in Pittsburgh, a garden for children, a nature and art park in Pennsylvania called Hempfield Park, and other public lands threatened with over development.
