Nearly 30 years ago, a group of concerned Christians resolved to take a legal stand for their rights as Americans under the Constitution. In their view, public policy was encroaching on unalienable rights: free exercise of religion; human dignity of the unborn; parental discretion free of state interference; unfettered political speech; and an understanding of marriage and family that spanned the millennia.
Establishing the Alliance Defending Freedom, these individuals further resolved to champion these rights for everyone, regardless of religious persuasion. In addition, the Alliance Defending Freedom promotes these values as universal and thus carries out its mission throughout the world.
According to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the cornerstone of our rightful claims as citizens is religious freedom — to discover and express wisdom with regard to life’s mysteries and revealed truth. Some may come to conclusions at variance with majority culture; their rights to proclaim and act in reasonable accordance with those beliefs are worthy of safeguard. This goes beyond Christian denominations to include Judaism, Islam and wide range of faith traditions. Religious belief informs our moral choices and liberty to follow — while respecting he rights of others — is a pillar of a free society and democratic republic.
Other rights follow. To speak one’s mind without endangering others on college campuses. for example — is basic to our constitutional framework and international order. Likewise, the prerogatives of parents in rearing their children should never be surrendered to the state.
Finally, without a doubt, the fundamental right of innocent human beings to live out the span of their years — from conception until natural death — is a non-negotiable foundation to the principles of liberty. To these ends, the Alliance Defending Freedom contends in courtrooms and public forums against government over-reach, imposed atheism and the culture of death. See this page for more information.
