Alliance Defending Freedom is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by Christian leaders to promote and defend religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family values. The organization’s mission is to advocate for the legal rights of people facing discrimination for their faith, protect the constitutional rights of individuals, and promote freedom of speech and conscience.
Alliance Defending Freedom has a team of over 100 attorneys and over 3,500 allied attorneys across the United States. The organization has won over 400 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, federal courts of appeal, and state supreme courts and has successfully defended the First Amendment Rights of people of all faiths.
The organization has taken on high-profile cases, such as defending Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, who was sued for declining to create a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Phillips’ favor, stating that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had shown hostility towards his religious beliefs.
ADF has also defended the rights of students on college campuses who have faced censorship and discrimination for expressing their faith and the right of pro-life pregnancy centers to operate without being forced to advertise for abortion.
In addition to its legal work, Alliance Defending Freedom provides resources and training to churches, pastors, and other faith-based organizations to help them navigate legal challenges and protect their religious freedom. The organization has also advocated for international religious freedom and has supported legal cases in other countries.
