Michael Gold Redefines Wealth Advice For Westport Families

The ultra-high-net-worth population is set to grow 6.7 percent this year, pushing total global wealth to $59.8 trillion. As firms lean on AI and digital platforms to handle the growing volume, one Connecticut advisor argues that software cannot replace the judgment his clients actually need.

Michael Gold, founder and CEO of Gold Family Wealth in Westport, built his practice around a simple premise. Superior outcomes for wealthy families come not from flashy products or charismatic salesmanship, but from controlling the decision-making process itself, guided by experience and careful research.

Faulty Incentives

“I think that’s what’s wrong with the industry. Wealth managers want to appease the clients,” Michael Gold Westport said. He points to his own experience with neurosurgeons during three spine surgeries as a model worth copying. Doctors ran a full suite of tests and then laid out every option, from conservative to aggressive, before he made a single decision. Few wealth managers operate with that same discipline, he argues.

Complexity Without a Map

Gold describes ultra-high-net-worth households as operating inside an unusually complex ecosystem shaped by legacy goals, family dynamics and the ordinary uncertainty that comes with managing both personal and business wealth. “These are not transactional issues. They cannot be automated or managed through standardized models,” he said.

That view puts Gold at odds with a broader industry trend toward digital convenience. Nearly all advisers, roughly 98 percent, now say new high-net-worth portfolios include some form of customization, meaning personalization has become baseline rather than a premium add-on. For families holding $30 million or more, Gold contends that customization alone falls short. What matters most, he says, is helping clients see the full range of viable paths, including the tradeoffs, before they make choices that cannot be undone.

From his Westport office, Gold has built what he calls the intellectual engine behind his entire firm, a dedicated practice whose frameworks for complex families now shape advisory standards across the organization. For a segment defined by irreversible decisions, he maintains that judgment, not automation, remains the deciding factor. Refer to this article for more information.
