Pozzo Family Sports Ownership

Since 2012, the Watford Football Club has been owned by the Pozzo family. The Pozzo history in sports club ownership goes back to 1986.

Pozzo family sports history

The Watford Football Club is a professional football club in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. It presently plays in the English football league system in the second-tier EFL Championship.

The Watford FC was organized in 1881. They have been promoted to the Premier League in three different seasons since 1999.

Gino Pozzo and his father bought the Watford FC in 2012. In 1986, Gino’s father bought the Udinese football club in their Italian hometown of Udine. The family had built a prosperous tool-making business. Today, they own and operate an electrical appliance business in Spain.

The Pozzo family’s name in sports club ownership rose to prominence with Udinese’s rise to glory in Italy. Their prominence was extended with their acquisition of Walford PC. In 2015, the Pozzo family owned three football clubs in England, Italy, and Spain.

In just four short years after the Pozzos purchased Walford FC the club was elevated from the Fourth Division to the Premier League.

Pozzo football strategy

Gino Pozzo is regarded as the mastermind of the Pozzo family’s sports interests. In 2015, the Wall Street Journal ran a story calling the Pozzos “European Soccer’s Ascendant Family”. In the 2015 season, all three of the family’s clubs competed in their respective league’s top-flight competitions.

Gino Pozzo employs a scout-driven strategy to manage his football businesses. Player recruitment and trades are at the center of the Pozzo strategy. Players are frequently traded between the family’s clubs. The Watford club has had eight different head coaches and managers since the Pozzos took it over. However, they are annual contenders for the Premier League. The Pozzo strategy must be working. See this page for related information.
